This year’s message from the Nelson Mandela Foundation of “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day” was realized when members of the U.S. Consulate Johannesburg participated in the 2014 67KM Relay for Mandela Day organized by Kaya FM in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Center of Memory.

The race took place on Sunday, July 13 at Polo Fields, Waterfall Estate, Sunninghill with over 16,000 participants. The Consulate was represented by 3 ten-member relay teams –  divided into Male (Scorpions), Female (Berries by Sherry), and Mixed (8Beautes & 2Brutes) with each team covering 5 legs of 6.7 KM in pairs – and an additional 12 participants for the Family Fun Walk of 1.67 KM which was led by apartheid activist, Mr. Ahmed Kathrada and the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Center of Memory, Mr. Sello Hatang.

Proceeds from last year’s event were used to refurbish libraries, created from old shipment containers, for under-resourced schools. This year’s funds will continue to support special education projects of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
