Security Message for U.S. Citizens
Student Demonstration in Sandton on Friday, September 30, 2016
September 28, 2016

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg informs U.S. citizens that a scheduled Congress of South African Students (COSAS) protest is scheduled for Friday, September 30th at George Lea Park in Sandton.  George Lea Park is at the intersection of William Nicol Drive and Sandton Drive. The City of Johannesburg has issued a permit for 2,500 participants.  Disruptions to motor vehicle traffic and public transportation are expected in the vicinity of the demonstration.

According to the plan filed by COSAS, the protest is scheduled to begin at 9:00am and conclude at 2:00pm; the students have not been granted permission to march.

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations; maintain situational awareness and exercise good judgment; stay alert; be aware of your surroundings at all times, and stay abreast of ongoing events through local media outlets.
