On behalf of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), I am deeply saddened by the death of Prudence Mabele.
Ms. Mabele was a force of nature and a guiding light in the AIDS response, both globally and in her home country of South Africa. She was one of the first South African women living with HIV to disclose her status, helping to break the silence and stigma surrounding the disease. She was also a tireless champion for the greater involvement of people living with HIV in every aspect of the AIDS response.
Ms. Mabele will be sorely missed, but her remarkable legacy lives on.
