March 1-3, 2016, the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, U.S. Poultry and Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) S.A. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and S.A. Department of Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) hosted a training seminar for South African entrepreneurs and importers interested in learning more about the processes to import American poultry to the South African market. This training, which brought together historically disadvantaged individuals (HDIs) from throughout South Africa with industry stakeholders. Presenters spoke on such topics as quota import permits, veterinary import permits, customs requirements, tariff and rebate permits, ordering, importing, financing, importing margins, distribution, securing clients and potential pitfalls.
A total of 31 new companies attended the seminar. All are entrepreneurs new to this industry and eager to learn about this new business opportunity that emerged from the AGOA agreement – including the difficulties, risks, and rewards, from international trade. They learned from real experts in exporting, importing, warehousing, veterinary requirements.
