Security Messages for U.S. Citizens: Demonstration in Pretoria on Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Security Messages for U.S. Citizens
U.S. Consulate General, Johannesburg
April 11. 2017

Various groups are calling for mass demonstrations in Pretoria, Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 12:00pm – 3:00pm. The “National Day of Action” demonstrators plan to gather in the Central Business District (CBD) at Church Square around 9:00am before they march to the Union Buildings. While the permit was approved for 10,000 participants, it is possible that larger crowds will gather and spectators will form along demonstration routes. Disruptions in the CBD with public transportation and traffic may cause congestion along Frances Baard, Struben, and Sophy De Bruyn Streets. In addition, expect unannounced road closures throughout the CBD.

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.
