Protest Alert: Violent Student Protests at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (March 10, 2021)

Location: Johannesburg South Africa – Braamfontein Neighborhood – University of
Witwatersrand

Event: Students and civilians are currently protesting in the area of the University of
Witwatersrand in Johannesburg’s Braamfontein neighborhood on March 10, 2021. Protestors
have erected barricades near the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Jorissen Street. Local police
have deployed riot control officers and the situation remains volatile.

Actions to Take: 

  • U.S. citizens should avoid the university campus where protest activity is greatest.
  • Remember that even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent.
  • Exercise caution in the areas surrounding the university, especially Jan Smuts Avenue
    and Jorrissen Street.
