Planned Demonstration in Vicinity of U.S. Consulate General Cape Town – June 17, 2016

The U.S. Consulate General Cape Town informs U.S. citizens that a demonstrations is expected to take place at at the U.S. Consulate General Cape Town from 1100 – 1300 hours on Friday, June 17, 2016.  The City of Cape Town has advised that the Force Du Congrés Populaire will be demonstrating with the stated purpose of asking the United States Government to pressure the Kabila administration to respect the Congolese constitution by having the president to step down at the end of his second term in office.  The City anticipates the size of the protest to be approximately 50 people, and it is restricted to occur on the Steenberg Road side of the Consulate.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.
