Planned Demonstration in Durban CBD

This message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to a demonstration planned for March 6 in Durban’s central business district.

There is a planned march by ANC KZN in support of Palestine. The march is planned to start outside the Grey Street Mosque, proceed down Yusuf Dadoo, cross over Dr. Ab Xuma, Monty Naicker, turn left into Dr. Pikley KaSeme, and then to City Hall.  The march will be from 13:00 to 16:00.  The expected number of marchers is approximately 5,000.

The US Consulate’s Regional Security Office has requested that all employees and dependents remain clear of both Dr. Pixley KaSeme Street and Durban City Hall for the duration of the demonstration.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in South Africa enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/go/step.html.  STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency.  If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

Regularly monitor the State Department’s website http://travel.state.gov/content/travel/english.html, where you can find current travel warnings, travel alerts, and the worldwide caution, and read the Country Specific information for South Africa http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/country/south-africa.html.
