On Monday 3 February 2014, 35 members of civil society representing 18 different sectors and affiliated to the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) met with representatives from the United States Government in Benoni to engage in discussions regarding PEPFAR programs and strategic direction. Organizations represented include the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT, National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and South African Youth Council (SAYC) amongst others. The United States Government would like to provide a forum for civil society partners to ask questions and provide comments on PEPFAR’s contribution to the National Strategic Plan and proposed priorities for this year. Civil Society provided some excellent feedback regarding PEPFAR’s strategy and priorities. Contact information was exchanged between civil society members and technical leads. Civil Society representatives were asked to share the information back to the rest of their colleagues and there was an agreement to work with SANAC leadership in future.
