“Free yourself. Free others. Serve everybody.” This quote epitomizes the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and it was voiced time and again at the Nelson Mandela International Day launch event held yesterday at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg. Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe offered keynote remarks along with Nelson Mandela Foundation Chairman Njabulo Ndebele, CEO Sello Hatang, and UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Agostinho Zacarias. Each speaker called on people across South Africa and the world to commemorate the vital legacy of Nelson Mandela not just by “doing good,” but by encouraging others to pause and consider and act on the lessons we learned from a great man. Among the many dignitaries present were members of the Mandela family including Ndileka Mandela and Luvuyo Mandela, as well as Mamphele Ramphele, Tokyo Sexwale, and U.S. Consul General Earl Miller.
