9 MINUTE READ
May 27, 2022

The U.S. Mission to South Africa is pleased to announce the launch of an online payment program for adult passport renewals for U.S. citizens residing in South Africa. Qualified applicants will no longer need to make an interview appointment.  Effective May 29, 2022, passport applicants wishing to pay for their DS-82 renewal application online may visit https://za.usembassy.gov/passports to determine eligibility to use this option. To qualify, you must answer YES to all of the following:

  1. I can submit my most recent U.S. passport book by mail with my renewal application.
  2. I was at least 16 years old when my most recent U.S. passport book was issued.
  3. I was issued my most recent U.S. passport book less than 15 years ago.
  4. My most recent U.S. passport book has a validity of 10 years from issuance to expiration.
  5. The U.S. passport book that I am renewing has not been mutilated, damaged, lost or stolen.
  6. My most recent U.S. passport book was issued in my current name (or I can document my name change by submitting marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order with my passport application.)

If eligible, applicants may then submit payment via U.S. or international credit or debit card, electronic funds transfer from a U.S.-based bank account, Amazon Pay, or Pay Pal, and then courier the passport application and old passport to the US Consulate General Johannesburg for renewal.   (Payment via EFT from a South Africa-based bank will not be possible.)  Please see our website for additional questions about this online fee payment option.  If you prefer, you can still schedule an in-person appointment for the renewal.
