An online appointment system is currently used at the U.S. Consulate General Johannesburg. Routine passport/citizenship and notarial services are by appointment only.
The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg, a branch of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South Africa, is located in Sandton and is headed by Consul General Vincent Spera. It is the Mission’s representatives to the people in region as well as the business and academic communities.
The Consulate General provides U.S. consular services in Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North-West Provinces. Consular services include help for Americans with emergencies as well as help with documents like passports and reports of birth. The Consulate helps non-Americans with non-immigrant and immigrant visas to the U.S.
Important Notice: With few exceptions, no information regarding a U.S. citizen overseas may be released to any individual without a Privacy Act waiver signed by the U.S. citizen for which an inquiry has been made.
For emergencies involving U.S. citizens (such as cases involving the serious illness, injury, arrest, victim of crime, or death of a U.S. citizen) please contact the U.S. Consulate General – Johannesburg (for assistance for U.S. citizens in the provinces of Gauteng, Northwest, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and Free State).

U.S. Consulate Johannesburg processes applications for Immigrant Visas to the U.S.
The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria does not provide any visa services. Applicants for visas in the Pretoria area should apply at the U.S. Consulate Johannesburg.
The U.S. Consulate Johannesburg processes Non-Immigrant Visa services for Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North-West Provinces and processes Immigrant Visa services for all provinces, and for applicants from Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
