Holiday Safety and Security

With the approaching holiday season, the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South Africa reminds U.S. citizens to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.  Criminals are aware that many people at this time of year are carrying gifts, such as expensive electronic items and jewelry.  The criminals may target individuals displaying valuable items or driving vehicles they believe – or can see – contain these items.  Minimize the amount of cash and valuables you carry.  Place valuable items in the trunk or boot of your vehicle, rather than leaving them in plain view.  Be vigilant at home and when traveling to guard against robbery and home invasions. Use your security alarm if you have one. Incidents of drunk driving also tend to increase along with the overall number of vehicles on South African motorways during the festive season.  Avoid driving late at night, and remain alert to aggressive or unpredictable drivers.

U.S. citizen victims of crime in South Africa are encouraged to report incidents to the South African police and to the nearest U.S. consular office.  The nationwide emergency number for the police is 10111, and the nationwide number for ambulance service is 10177.  It is not necessary to dial an area code when calling these numbers.
