General Electric: Investing in and Partnering with South Africa

Check out “The Most African Locomotive” built through an innovative partnership between U.S. Company GE and Transnet Freight Rail.

Yesterday, U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Patrick Gaspard had a tour of the Transnet Engineering Koedoespoort Facility, along with General Electric Southern Africa CEO Tom Konditi

In March last year, the South African-owned freight, transport and logistics company announced GE won a contract to produce 233 locomotives for the SA rail freight network. This is in addition to the 143 locomotives that Transnet has ordered from GE since 2010.

More than $500 million has been invested to develop the Evolution Series line since 2005, making it the most advanced heavy-haul, diesel-electric locomotive in the world. 5000 new jobs in local rail and associated industries and skills development programs are just a few of the benefits of this partnership.
