Expert Advice Series: The Energy of Tomorrow

Are you interested in futuristic energy that is actually happening now? Did you know that South Africa leads sub-Saharan Africa in installed power-generating capacity? What is generating capacity, anyway? And how does renewable energy figure in the picture?

Stephen Koopman from South Africa’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research explains how renewable energy sources like solar and wind have caught up with fossil fuel resources like coal in providing energy cheaply. South Africa has particularly abundant solar and wind energy resources.

“Renewables now account for roughly 5 percent of South Africa’s total generation capacity,” Koopman says.

“That means more power, for more people, at a much lower cost,” he adds.
