Shots Fired at Sandton Gautrain Station

Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens
(May 20, 2016)

The U.S. Consulate General in Johannesburg has learned that shots were fired at the Sandton Gautrain station on Rivonia Road during a violent confrontation between the metered taxi associations in Johannesburg and the online transportation network company Uber.  Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Service are on the scene.

Further incidents are likely near traditional taxi stands around the city, particularly at larger stands, such as those outside Gautrain stations or at the airports.  Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Service’s public order units are monitoring the situation.

U.S. citizens should exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests.  Review your personal security plans; remain aware and vigilant of your surroundings, including local events, monitor local news stations for updates and follow instructions from local authorities. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.  For the latest information, please monitor local media sources.
