Election-Related Demonstrations and Disruptions

Election-Related Demonstrations and Disruptions

Security Message for U.S. Citizens
June 21, 2016

The U.S. Diplomatic Mission to South Africa informs U.S. citizens that municipal elections are scheduled to take place in South Africa on August 3, 2016.  Spontaneous civil disruptions, including demonstrations and protests, are occurring and may continue to occur before and during the election period with little or no advance warning throughout South Africa.  Media reports indicate that some of the demonstrations have involved violence.

U.S. citizens are reminded that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid large gatherings and demonstrations during the election period; maintain situational awareness and exercise good judgment; stay alert; be aware of your surroundings at all times, and stay abreast of ongoing events through media outlets.
