Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Pretoria, South Africa (April 24, 2018)
Location: Multiple locations through South Africa including but not limited to: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, and Durban.
Event: According to media reports the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is calling on workers across the country to stay at home, Wednesday April 25, 2018, for a national shut down strike against the proposed minimum wage and amendments to South African labor law.
At an April 24 press conference, SAFTU announced marches at 10:00 a.m. on April 25 in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, and Durban to protest the proposed R20 per hour minimum wage.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid the areas of the demonstrations.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Keep a low profile.
