Demonstration Alert:  U.S. Embassy Pretoria, South Africa (June 2, 2020)

Location: South Africa

Event:  We are aware of social media calls for protests at U.S. facilities in South Africa related to ongoing civil unrest in the United States.  These protests could occur as soon as June 3, 2020.  Due to South Africa’s current Level 3 lockdown regulations, protesters are unable to obtain proper authorization to hold demonstrations, so protests could occur with little or no notice.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the area of the demonstrations.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Monitor local media for updates.

Operating Status:  Effective March 26, 2020, U.S. Consulates General Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban have suspended routine consular services.  For emergency American Citizens Services, including emergency passports, please visit our websites for additional information.  During level 3, the Consulates will be available for mission critical and emergency services only.  Please email using the contact information at the bottom of this alert to schedule an appointment if you have an emergency need for services.  Otherwise, please wait until appointments are reopened online.
