Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Event: Due to the deteriorating security situation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the U.S. Department of State has placed Embassy Addis Ababa on Authorized Departure. The Department has determined that travel to Ethiopia (including all transit) is unsafe at this time. Further escalation is likely, and may cause supply chain shortages, communication blackouts and travel disruptions. Accordingly, all travel to or through Ethiopia by Mission South Africa members under Chief of Mission authority and EFMs is prohibited, without special approval. No impact on Embassy operations within South Africa is expected.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid traveling to Ethiopia
- Avoid flights transferring through Addis Ababa
- If currently in Ethiopia, exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
