“African Solutions to African Problems”That was one of the primary messages U.S. Ambassador Patrick Gaspard shared in a wide-ranging conversation with more than 120 graduate and honours students at the University of the Western Cape on September 9.  “We’re investing in Africa’s youth.  With plans to expand the inaugural Mandela Washington Leadership program in the coming years, we’re committed to cooperating with young leaders throughout the continent to devise African solutions to African problems.”

For 90 minutes, the ambassador and the students shared their impressions of the U.S.-South Africa relationship; including the U.S.-Africa Leaders’ Summit, the Young African Leaders Initiative’s (YALI) Mandela Washington Leadership program, Power Africa, and the role of the U.S. in Africa.  Ambassador Gaspard also familiarized the students with the many American work and study programs for which they can apply.
